Soft pastels portrait on packaging paper art journal

Remember my brown packaging paper art journal? It’s time to draw again and fill in the pages! It’s been a while since I haven’t used my soft pastels, and today I grab them and drew this face:

E timpul sa desenez iar ceva in el!

I was inspired by an old photo with vintage colors and since I only have a set of brown soft pastels, it was just perfect to try this face.

And the paper brown color helps a lot when drawing faces. It’s like you already have a background for the skin, and that shows up in the final result.

Iar culoarea hartiei maro ajuta mult atunci cand desenezi fete.

Oh, well, there she is! The only problem I see with soft pastels is that you have to use a fixative to help them stay on the paper. That’s one of the reasons I don’t use them too often.

  1. I read that soft pastels are ideal for toned paper. In this case, your toned paper is the brown packaging paper! I say that’s a more eco-friendly approach to painting in pastels. 🙂

    1. I really love the fact that it takes all the pressure of ruining the paper if something goes “wrong” and you don’t actually get the desired result. That makes it more easy to express yourself and let go! 😉
