Visual Sketchbooks

{Limba Română}

When I don’t feel like painting, I sketch! There is nothing better than creating sketches over a cup of coffee or simply killing your time when you wait in a queue, especially if you have plenty of minutes doing ..nothing!

Visual sketchbooks are just like visual journals: they gather together your way of seeing the world around you. Some use acrylics in their sketchbooks and create amazing works. To me, a sketchbook is something less demanding and rather free from any expectations. In my art journals I
may use any kind of medium, but my sketchbooks are the raw part of my creating voice, with unfinished pages and only using mostly pens and watercolors. They dry fast and I can turn the page and start over. I prefer to use a black pen and sketch without worrying I will ruin an otherwise “good” sketch.

Why keep a sketchbook?

  • A sketch only takes 5-10 minutes to sketch something: don’t be precise; in fact, forget about it: just scribble something on the paper
  • A sketchbook it’s a place to note down your ideas…in a visual manner: when I was creating handmade jewels I used to draw my design ideas so that I can remember them later
  • It helps you boost your drawing skills: the more you create, the better you’ll get at
  • it speaks up illustrating your everyday life
  • there’s no pressure to get things done correctly, because there’s no right or wrong way of sketching(at least when you begin)
  • people love sketchbooks, and you’ll love having your own!

There are many artists who share their sketchbooks around the web, so you can get inspired to get your own sketchbook and get started! Here are some pages I love to visit from time to time and get inspired:

  1. http://www.urbansketchers.org – I absolutely love this website and makes me wanna draw everything I see when going out down ton. Maybe that’s why I like to keep my sketchbook along with some watercolors and a water brush in my bag at all times! Urban sketchers global directory here.
  2. http://sketchbookchallenge.blogspot.com – the site hasn’t been updated since last year, but there are plenty amazing sketches to use as inspiration;
  3. http://www.studentartguide.com/articles/art-sketchbook-ideas – Some sketching pages to get started, filled with lots of drawing resources, just browse the webpage.
  4. http://sketchbookskool.com/blog – A group of 6 artists teach you how to draw in 6 different ways! Learn more about it here.
  5. Join a drawing challenge! More details over here.

Need even more inspiration? There are several books on amazon that teach you how to draw and sketch, but basically you need to do it by yourself. I’m telling you, all you need it’s a sketchbook and a pencil! What I can recommend you is one inspirational book I find very useful when starting. I bought it on Amazon.com and I keep it close and flip its pages once in a while. It’s called The art of urban sketching, and only by flipping its preview you can get some interesting insights and what to expect if you buy it. There are others two added to my wish list, and those are: An Illustrated Journey: Inspiration From the Private Art Journals of Traveling Artists, Illustrators and Designers and the second one is The Urban Sketcher: Techniques for Seeing and Drawing on Location.

Mai sunt încă două pe care le-am adaugat la lista de dorințe, și anume An Illustrated Journey: Inspiration From the Private Art Journals of Traveling Artists, Illustrators and Designers și The Urban Sketcher: Techniques for Seeing and Drawing on Location.
